“Pops” John Warren Mooers Sr. Warren was born in Lisbon, Portugal to Horatio and Marguerite Mooers on January 15, 1924 where his father was stationed as a U.S. Consulate General. Pops traveled the world with his parents and older brother, Richard Clive Mooers, before meeting the love of his life, Doris Danielson, in San Diego. As bugler at the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad, CA, Warren blew the assembly call for his classmates on December 7, 1941, where they were informed of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Warren joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Harry Lee during World War II. When he returned, Warren earned his B.A. at San Diego State University and became a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Warren and Doris married in 1946 and were the roots of an extensive family tree including six children, 15 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Warren's passion for life was only surpassed by his love for his family. Professional passions included marketing and sales promotion. He was a past President and life member of the San Diego Advertising and Sales Club and past District Governor of the American Advertising Federation. Personal passions included a profound love for music and his trumpet. His 21 piece big band orchestra, “Warren Mooers and his Orchestra,” played at events throughout Southern California. He was also an active member of the Musicians Union, Local 325. A lifetime member of both the Mission Bay Yacht Club and Southwestern Yacht Club, Warren loved to sail. His boat, “The Pelican,” was the source of fond memories for both family and friends. He was also a volunteer docent at the “Star of India.” He truly enjoyed passing on his sailing expertise to the next generation. John Warren Mooers Sr. left us to be with the Lord on March 21, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Doris Mooers, six children Carolyn Enns, Julie Kopanke, Peggy Bear, John Mooers Jr., Robert Mooers, Tom Mooers, and his brother Clive. Memorial services will be held at noon on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery located at 140 Sylvester Road, San Diego, CA 92106 followed by a celebration of his life at 1pm at the Mission Bay Yacht Club located at 1215 El Carmel Place, San Diego, CA 92109 In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made on Warren's behalf to support the Mission Bay Yacht Club's Junior Sailing Program. |
